BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — A man shot this afternoon in East Lake is expected to survive, according to Birmingham police.
Police were called to 83rd Street South between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue about 3:30 p.m.
Officers said they were trying to determine what led to the shooting.
Some neighbors said they heard a single shot, others said multiple shots were fired.
“Gunshots are so common around here I didn’t even really pay attention,” said William Mauldin, who has lived a short distance from today’s crime scene for about 15 years. “If it’s close enough, you duck. Otherwise, it’s just an everyday thing.”
Residents said the victim is a man in his early 20s who lives in or around the neighborhood. They said after being shot in the street he ran into a nearby alley and collapsed. Birmingham firefighters took him to a hospital.
Officers armed with rifles were seen searching for the shooter in several nearby neighborhoods.
