According to a survey of damage, the tornado appeared to have touched down around 11:16 p.m. near Academy Drive and traveled northeast past UAB Medical West Hospital before it lifted nine minutes later near Dartmouth Avenue and 32nd Street South.

BESSEMER, Alabama — The tornado
that went through Bessemer Monday night has been classified as an EF-2,
with peak winds around 120 mph, according to a
preliminary report by the National Weather Service
.

According to
a survey of damage, the tornado appeared to have touched down around 11:16 p.m.
near Academy Drive and traveled northeast past UAB Medical West Hospital before
it lifted nine minutes later near Dartmouth Avenue and 32nd Street South.

The tornado’s
path was estimated at about 4.9 miles long and 600 yards wide, and no injuries
were reported, according to the NWS.

It caused
damage to homes northeast of Academy Drive as trees were knocked down, then
destroyed the clubhouse at Frank House Municipal Golf Course, and then hit the
Timberline West apartment complex near Memorial Drive, causing roof damage that
rendered it a “total loss,” city officials said. Over the course of its path,
it uprooted hundreds of trees.

The tornado
that hit the Kimberly area Monday night was
rated an EF-1 in a preliminary report, and one that hit Graysville was
rated and EF-2.
